Using Barablu technology to keep saving cash

November 2nd, 2007 | by Max

BarabluSaving money by using serviced offices is one thing but the canny business owner looks to keep saving money all the time. And because paring costs can mean the difference between profit and loss, anything is up for grabs.

Take telecoms for example, one of the biggest expenditures facing any modern enterprise at a time when keeping in touch with customers around the world has become even more important.

Increased use of internet technologies like Skype could be one answer. It uses a now-proven method called VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) which lets users talk across a high-speed broadband connection between computers. In fact, many low-cost direct-dial networks use VoIP on a bigger scale to offer massive discounts on international call charges. Industry research shows that VoIP use can mean up to an 80% saving in call costs in the short term.

Just this week, Skype announced a partnership with cellular network 3 to launch a mobile phone with limited VoIP capability, allowing Skype Phone users to make calls to Skype-equipped computers, although not to other phones.

However, what is much more interesting for small business or even the one-man band is Mobile VoIP, sometimes known as VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi).

One of the most fully-featured VoWiFi applications is Barablu, a free piece of software that runs on your mobile phone, PC or even Mac computer. It means that whenever you’re connected to a WiFi network, such as your home or office broadband — or even a WiFi hotspot in your nearest Starbucks – you can make free calls to the people at the next hotspot or one half a world away! You can even call VoIP-equipped computers for free too, or for a trivial cost per minute, any number in the world.

For business, this means that you can keep in contact with your workforce — wherever they may be — for nothing. The software also shows who’s online and who’s not — known as “presence” — which is especially good for tracking purposes, and also supports free conference calling facilities and multiple chat sessions.

You can download the free Barablu application at their web site, barablu.com.

i wonder if the office space providers like Regus will allow people to use programs like this? I love the idea of saving money, but i imagine that these companies (Regus, Avanta etc) make money on the extras like calls, internet and so on aswell as the office rents? They couldnt stop people using things like barablu could they?

im sure that software such as barablu and skype would see this coming and allow for the ports to be changed, so that they cannot be detected.

Hi, thank you for mentioning Barablu.

The software would certainly help reduce the cost of communication, and its many benefits (like conference calling, group chat, file transfer and file sharing) are all safe, secure and easy to use.

As far as blocking it goes, the only requirement for Barablu to work is internet access since we use the same basic technology as an ordinary web browser. Thus to block Barablu would require blocking web access itself, which is unlikely even with the meanest office supplier.
