Office Dress Code

May 28th, 2008 | by Simon Rattray

It is not only the way we work but what we wear to work that may be changing at the moment, that’s according to research from the Aziz corporation.  They cite that upto 60% of offices now prefer workers to come in that awful phrase “smart casual”, rather than a traditional suit.

The more informal approach ties in (excuse the pun) with a more relaxed attitude to what people wear in the office such as dressing down Fridays for example.  Certainly this has long been the norm in the creative and advertising industries.  Suits are often seen as over formal, obstructive and regimented.

Khalid Aziz from Aziz said “There is no longer a perception that we have to wear suits in order to be smart.”
He added “Enforcing a suits-only dress code is seen as outdated and perhaps a little insular in an increasingly international workplace, an image which savvy modern companies want to steer clear of.”

Other interesting findings were that there was apparently an increasing acceptance of tattoo’s.  And 84% of those surveyed thought that flip flops were not suited to the office environment.  Hardly a revelation!

I’ve never been able to master the smart casual look, my attempts are limited to taking off my jacket and tie.
Long may our dress policy be suits only; the thought of scouring the Next directory for smart casual wear fills me with dread.

I am also currently researching casual Fridays as part of postgraduate study and am trying to find an organisation that currently has a casual Friday dress policy and that would let it’s employees take part in a short (5 minute) electronic survey. It would be great if the survey could be emailed to 150 employees. If you can help me please email joannaheke@hotmail.com
