Government wastes money on office space
June 28th, 2008 | by Adam LuckingChoregus can reveal that civil servants in the Treasury are running up bills in excess of £326m per annum on office space. This makes their bill more than twice that as people in the private sector.
In a report released by the Committee of Public Accounts it states that at least a third of the £1bn costs spent on public sector office space could be cut back and saved. The report also went on to say that office space used by the Government departments were 14 – 50% less effective than the benchmarks in the private sector.
It was the Treasury that has the biggest costs with office space with £12,041 per person with 232 sq ft of space allocated to each person. In the private sector this is usually 100 – 200 sq ft. So the amount wasted is quite considerable and there is definite room for improvement when comparing with the private sector.
Really, the government should consider looking at some serviced office solutions as the cost savings can be up to 60% on what they are spending now.
