Five ways to cut waste and save money in the office
July 21st, 2008 | by Simon Rattray |Reducing office waste makes sound financial sense whilst also helping to protect the environment. There are dozens of ways that your business can reduce it’s impact on the environment. Today, we have outlined five steps that could help reduce waste and save your business money.
IT
- Email has had a huge impact upon the way businesses work. However there is still room for a reduction in how much is sent in the post. Rather than post marketing material for example, why not send it via email. It is more likely to be read and will go to the correct person immediately.
- Turn PC’s off at night, this is also more secure than leaving yourself logged on. A computer that is on standby still uses half the energy needed to power it normally.
Power
- Use long lasting light bulbs. They cost more than orthodox light bulbs but last a lot longer.
Paper
- Use recycled paper, its cheaper!
- Adjust the printer so it prints on both sides. Many workers will print a document just to proof read it more easily. So there is no need for separate sheets of paper.
- Do you have material being routinely sent to your businesses that always goes straight in the bin? If so inform the sender that they are wasting both your resources.
Printing
- Colour printing costs upto 50% more than in black and white. Try to keep colour printing to when it is absolutely necessary.
- Don’t bin the ink cartridge! They can be recycled.
Water
- Plastic cups can be convenient, but create a lot of waste as people rarely re use them. Use glasses instead.
- Use a water displacement bag to reduce the amount of water used per flush.
- Don’t over fill the kettle.
