Derwent London seal planning permission for Paddington deal
January 11th, 2008 | by Simon Rattray |Derwent London has sealed planning permission for it’s 425,000 square feet multi use development adjacent to Paddington station. This follows some serious negotiation with Ken Livingstone who had concerns over afforable housing. The original application included a plan for residential apartments but these contravened the councils guidelines that 30% of new housing should be made afforable.
Derwent were against this as they argued it would render the project not “financially viable”, but offered a payment to the council of over £5m towards their social housing budget. After discussions with the Mayor and the Greater London Authority, Derwent agreed to sixteen afforable homes and no additional payment. The council accepted this as there is a shortage of afforable social housing in the West End. The approved plan is vastly different from the original one submitted in 2003 which was rejected wholesale by the council.
