Cisco open telepresence in Dublin
April 9th, 2008 | by Simon Rattray
Cisco announced it has opened it’s first telepresence suite in Dublin. There will be two models available, the Cisco TelePresence 1000 for small or one-to-one meetings. and i addition to this there will be the Cisco TelePresence 3000 which is for use when there is a larger group in session (10 or more). This equipment doesn’t come cheaply though - the costs are approximately £40,000 for the 1000 model and £150,000 for the 3000.
Irish Minister for communications Michael Galvin has previously commented that rising travel costs, time limitations and the impact upon the environment of international air travel means that this kind of technology is likely to become more prominent in the future. One can only imagine that this technology must really be impressing those who have used it as there seems to be a lot of hype surrounding its use.
Cisco’s version of the TelePresence technology uses an ultra high-def 1080p video, wideband spatial audio plus imperceptible low latency. Although best delivered over a Cisco network, Cisco are planning to issue certification for service providers to help proliferate telepresence’s use.
