Blears puts the brake on Beetham’s Tower
April 2nd, 2008 | by Simon Rattray |
Beetham’s Tower, a planned 51 storey development in Southwark, has been ‘called in’ by the Government. The skyscraper was meant to be one of the centre pieces of this area of London, but it is highly likely that it will not be ready for the London 2012 Olympics. There will now be a public enquiry into the development to address concerns that the tower will obscure views from St James’ park.
There is also concerns as to whether the tower will conflict “with national and regional policies” as well as the impact it will have on regulations regarding affordable housing in London. In addition to this Secretary of State Hazel Blears also inquired as to whether the tower will conform to the Southwark Unitary Development Plan and the Mayor’s “London Plan”. The public inquiry will be held later this year and will conclude in early 2009.
